Mickey is probably one of my favorite companions. Right? Because he starts out as Rose’s boyfriend. He loses her to The Doctor — so that kind of makes him a loser because he lost his girlfriend. That’s kind of sad, right and they played with that a little bit. He wasn’t quite as good as The Doctor, but he worked at it. He discovered that he wanted to be more in the episode where Sarah Jane came back and what he really does that is so cool is when he has a chance to pick a parallel universe or a real universe, he wants to stay in the universe where his grandmother is still alive. His grandmother is the most important influence in his life. Not a grandfather. Not a dad. A woman who he wants to spend more time within his own life. SoI thought that was a super cool thing for him to choose to do. And of course, at the very end of David Tennant’s era, he visited all his past companions and did something to save their life before he regenerated and we discovered that in the interim Mickey and Martha have fallen in love and gotten married. So, he picked the most equal and powerful woman that he could be with if he couldn’t have Rose. Right? So, he grew up and moved on to an adult relationship, not a dependent younger relationship..

We also had this young gentleman who was in both the Baker and the Davison Era who was Adric, who was a math genius and he was a young kid so he had more access to his emotions. We don’t let young boys have their emotions. We tell them not to cry. That’s stupid. Humans cry. There’s no such thing as not cryng, right, but we do that. So, it was nice to have Adric as an example back in the day. And until I was putting this together I never had read that fun fact. That’s where they got his name from — an actual Nobel-winning guy. I thought it was pretty cool. I love that — again — writers playing and giving us more information. I just learned something a guy I had never heard of, right? A little research.

In the old era, but also largely in the new era, all the men have been given the chance to be depicted as sensitive human beings, which gives them a 3-dimensional complete humanity. Which I think is very important. Now in the very early days, as I said, Lethbridge-Stewart is the father of Kate, so that is how we invented her character in the future. So he started out in the early days with Jon, came through guest starred as an older actor of course on The Sarah Jane Adventures and he came into modern Who in one episode where everybody was turned into a Cyberman who had died. All the people buried in cemeteries had their bodies converted into Cybermen and yet he’s in a cemetery when his daughter gets kicked out of an airplane and she’s going to die except he catches her and saves her life which is a super-cool thing and because he loves his daughter. He’s a super-Dad which is a super-sensitive cool thing to be and so that’s why when the actor actually died they had The Doctor honor him with that portrait which I thought was pretty cool. So even back in the day, we had a relatively sensitive man.

Then finally we ended with the Peter Capaldi era — we ended with Bil Potts, who had the strength — probably spoilers. If you don’t watch the show — you have to watch the show. She ends up being converted into a Cyberman, but she doesn’t — she’s the only person to have that happen to her who doesn’t lose her own humanity. She knows who she is and that isn’t supposed to happen when you’re converted right? Then you/re just a talking robot and nobody cares. So that’s how strong she is. She maintains her humanity in the face of that. So, we’ve had a ton of strong women. A ton of strong women across the years. Busting that gender stereotype that women need to be saved. On Doctor Who mostly women are helping save the day and save him.

Then she has to deal with finding out that her baby gets stolen. I mean that’s a long, epic adventure for poor Amy. It’s a lot to put one woman through. At the very end, though, I think the coolest thing in the world is — as much as people wanted to try to say she was going to fall for The Doctor — she and Rory were the first married couple to travel with The Doctor and to leave your husband for another guy would have been cheesy of her and she didn’t think of her Doctor friend in that way. She never stopped loving her husband. Spoiler alert, if you haven’t seen this. At the end of their time with The Doctor we lose Rory to the Weeping Angels who were a cool invention of Steven Moffat and when she finds out that all she has to do is allow herself to be taken by them as well and she’ll end up in the past with him, she gives up her adventuring, exciting life with The Doctor to go with her husband because that’s who she loves and she was going to take that chance and that’s hugely strong. Really, really, hugely strong, I think.

River Song is, of course, an invention of Steven Moffat. Right? and she’s super strong. She died twice — well, she dies once completely to help save The Doctor and the second time she gives all her regeneration power to Matt Smith’s Doctor, so he won’t die. Literally sacrifices her own chance to regenerate ten more times so that he won’t die. You can’t get much stronger than that. That is coming to Prince Charmings rescue. That’s the Princess coming to the rescue of the guy. I mean that’s huge and that’s written by Steven Moffat. So I think that’s worth noting.

But probably more important as a normal example to people is when she realizes that her affections would never be returned in the same way, rather than stay in a relationship that would always be depressing, she told him why she was leaving and she left. That is a huge strength and a huge thing to represent to young men and women in bad relationships. So that is pretty cool and not to mention the fact that she happened to be the first Englishman of African Descent — when I first wrote about her I wrote about her as an African-American until the English editor said “No. She lives in England” and I went “Oh yeah, so she can’t be an African-American. She’s an Englishman of African Descent that’s how they refer over there. She had to work with sometimes going into the past and dealing with the way people of African descent would have been treated in those earlier historic times and that was a much more difficult thing to do than some of the other companions of European descent. So she had a lot more strength than people gave her credit for. In my opinion.
