Coming Soon: A chapter in a new book, Doctor Who: New Dawn: Essays on the Jodie Whitaker Era

There are many exciting steps along the way to having a chapter you’ve written about a beloved television show accepted into a book collection.

  • First you see the Call for Submissions, have an idea and send in an abstract.
  • Then they tell you they like your idea and want to include it in their collection.
  • Then you write the chapter and they send back minimal notes.
  • Then (that’s today) they send you the artwork for the cover and you smile all over again knowing other fans of the show will be reading your ideas as they consider the importance of the show to our culture.

Coming Soon: A chapter in a new book, Doctor Who: New Dawn: Essays on the Jodie Whitaker Era

All those steps (except the cover page) happened recently on a couple of upcoming collections I’m contributing to but the other day this cover came along for Doctor Who: New Dawn: Essays on the Jodie Whitaker Era and I couldn’t be more excited that a show I originally watched on PBS back in Ohio and followed all these years then made their lead character a female and then I had the chance to write about how a writer could go about making such a culturally important change.

My essay is entitled ‘She is wise and unafraid’: writing the first female Doctor and a diverse universe for her to protect

The book itself will be out later this year!

Rosanne Speaks About Doctor Who At Who Con San Diego This Weekend – October 4-6, 2019

For the second year in a row I’ve been invited to do a couple of my favorite lectures about Doctor Who to the attendees of the SD (San Diego) Who Con which happens this coming Friday-Sunday October 4-6th.

It’s a chance to wear my new 13th Doctor (played by actress Jodie Whitaker who I first saw in Broadchurch) shirt and trenchcoat (which I bought from a vendor at last year’s SC Who Con).  I’m updating two of my lectures on the show and its quality writing and then doing a ‘superbowl/commentary’ group watch of an episode called School Reunion which I use in my television writing courses as an example of a tight script/backdoor pilot.

This all came about thanks to a chance meeting on the Raleigh Studios lot with a wonderful fellow Who fan who happens to bear a striking resemblance to Alex Kingston, the actress who played the character River Song. Her office was strewn with Who memorabilia so I stopped in one day to say “Hi” and talk Who and she connected me to the organizers of the event. So the moral of this story is – say “Hi” to more people often. You never know what new (time) travels might be right around your next corner- — Rosanne

Presenting My Talk – The Sisterhood of Science Fiction: A Walk Through Some Writers and Characters You (Should) Know and Love

Cal Poly Pomona University Library

Thanks to another invite from Kris Zoleta and the wonderful staff at the CPP Library I presented another lunchtime lecture yesterday.

This talk was on famous female writers of science fiction both in books (from Mary Shelley to Octavia Butler) and on television with a side tangent on important and influential female characters of science fiction (from Lt. Nyota Uhura to Dana Scully).

The audience responded well, many asking me for recommendations for summer reading)  and the nicest compliment I received came from an engineering student who came up to me afterward to say she was either going to do homework or come to my talk during her lunch break and she was ever so happy she had chosen to come to the talk.

Which is really very close to “Do or Do not. There is no try.” It’s always the same kind of ideal, let’s just go do these things.

How to study television writers from Rosanne Welch, Ph.D - 2 in a series

“When people talk about television I get them to try and look at what were your favorite episodes of a program. Now, go to IMDB and find out who wrote those episodes and look at the rest of their career. What else have they written that you might enjoy, because clearly they speak to you. Their voice speaks to you.”
