Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan at Night

The world’s first shopping mall.😀 An amazing place I visited on a number of occasions during this trip. Also home to an amazing Leonardo exhibit.

This is adjacent to the Piazza del Duomo and was filled with people and music each evening. A perfect place for passeggiata, and Italian evening stroll.

On Benjamin Franklin…

While spending my Saturday approving the copyedits in the Technical Innovation in American History 3 volume encyclopedia Peg and I completed this year, I came upon the entry for Almanacs and was reminded of these smart bits of advice from none other than Benjamin Franklin.

Isn’t it funny how he becomes such an icon of history – and such a character (he even appeared in an episode of Bewitched!) that we forget he was a man – and a writer – and a rebel (why does ‘writer’ and ‘rebel’ often go hand in hand?).

Remember he said it first:

“There are no gains without pains.”
“One today is worth two tomorrows.”
“Have you something to do tomorrow? Do it today.”

When Women Called the Shots: The Forgotten Story of Early Hollywood’s Female Filmmakers

The KCET documentary Lost LA is designed to cover the hidden stories of our city. This clip comes from Season 2, episode four “The Dream Factory” and covers the lost history of Hollywood’s early female screenwriters and directors. Most of them appear in our upcoming collection of essays When Women Wrote Hollywood. This segment is similarly titled “When Women Called the Shots.”

Happy Halloween: Listen to this LIVE adaptation of Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

Our friends, Keri Dearborn and Michael Lawshe just released their annual Halloween show, Ghosts of the Internet.

This year it is a live recording of Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, adapted by Keri Dearborn.

If you listen, you might hear 2 familiar voices among the cast (wink, wink)
