On our trip to Milan for the 2019 SRN Conference we had the time to visit the Museum of the Risorgimento so I could do some research on the Italian perspective of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the topic of my second Mentoris novel. It really helped me see him from several sides – and artwork like this highlighted the place he holds in world civilization.

Semester In LA Writers Round Table Class

Here’s a great photo of my current (and nearly graduated) Columbia College Writers Round Table class together with the marvelous actors who joined us for the last 3 weeks. The did table reads of all 9 student scripts. The actors are: Erron Jay (on the right in the back row), Khanisha Foster (2nd row #6 from the left/standing next to me), Juan Villa (last one on the right in the 2nd row) and Christina Nieves (in the middle in the front row). Kudos to Khanisha for gathering them all for us because they went above and beyond the call of duty by giving great notes for the (inevitable with all writing) rewrites to come. All in all, a fun and productive 3-week collaboration!

Last Stephens MFA Workshop for the Class of 2019

Many, many thanks to the soon-to-be-graduating Class of 2019 from the Stephens College MFA in TV and Screenwriting who presented me with a marvelous photo of them all posed in front of the mural that adorns the conference room where we hold so many of our classes. It was a great final week of workshop for this low residency program, topped off with excellent Q&A sessions with producer Karen Loop (“On the Basis of Sex”), executive producer Aaron Thomas (SWAT), producer (and current mentor) Valerie Woods (Queen Sugar), writer (and alum) Sahar Jahani (Ramy) — and lectures on Italian neorealism from visiting professor Dr. Paolo Russo (Oxford-Brookes).

I look forward to working with all our future alums as they move forward in their own exciting careers!

Standing in James Herriot’s Kitchen and looking out into the garden

James Herriot is one of my favorite writers and I love the BBC television adaptations of the stories, too.

Back in 2016 we visited his hometown of Thirsk in Yorkshire and this amazing museum.

The Mentoris Project Book Launch Party And Reading With Dr. Rosanne Welch

I was deeply honored to be asked to read a section of my novel America’s Forgotten Founding Father (on the life of Filippo Mazzei) at the launch party for the entire Mentoris Book Project, which includes over 30 books about famous Italians and Italian Americans. At the Italian Cultural Institute in Westwood over a hundred family and friends gathered to celebrate this new publishing venture created by Robert Barbera under the umbrella of his Barbera Foundation. The evening also offered the chance to meet the director of the Italian Cultural Institute, Valeria Rumori and her cultural attache, Leonilde Callocchia.

That local rock group down the street that’s trying hard to learn their song?

Well, that local rock group is me. I play drums in a Monkees cover band.

Please note that I did not say “tribute” band. The Stepping Stones do not try to re-create the Monkees experience. We do not wear matching red, double-placket shirts. Our lead guitarist does not wear a green woolly hat.

We are not like the Missing Links, a band out of Los Angeles that won the coveted Cloney Award, given by the International Guild of Celebrity Impersonators and Tribute Artists.

We are not like Pleasant Valley Sunday, another Monkees tribute band from Southern California that actually performs with a laugh track.
