Rosanne Reads At Paperback LA Event in Echo Park – November 7, 2019
I had a great time joining fellow authors at the first reading for Paperback LA, the anthology series that published my article about the writers of The Monkees — so I’m super excited to appear at a second event celebrating the series. And it’s a chance to experience another bookstore in LA.
I hope you can join me, my fellow authors and our intrepid editor, Susan La Tempa, on Thursday November 7th at Stories Books and Cafe on Sunset Blvd in Echo Park.
The critics call Paperback L.A. “Genius!” and “incredibly fun” but they’re understating the pleasures of this new school “casual anthology.”
Join us to toast and hear from incredible L.A. writers with stories about all sorts of things–1920s books, 1960s street racing, 1960s TV writers, 1980s plumbing — all set in L.A. Featuring contributors from all three volumes: Victoria Dailey (L.A.’s Early Moderns), Jim Gavin (Middle Men), Lou Mathews (L.A. Breakdown), Rosanne Welch (Why the Monkees Matter), and series editor Susan LaTempa.
Amenities: eat and drink on the premises; beer & wine served 5 p.m. to close; parking lot behind store.

On my first day in São Paulo I was taken on a lovely walk through the downtown area near the college and here we can go fun this beautiful bookstore full of art and books and I was pleased to see many titles I recognized, though they were of course in Portuguese so I could not purchase them to read. But it was a beautiful site and a lovely way to understand the city is full of readers.

Many, many thanks to Glaucia Davino for inviting me to Mackenzie Presbyterian Institute in Sao Paolo to speak to her conference, but especially for arranging for me to meet many of her dedicated doctoral students, including Livia, who gave me a wonderful walking tour of the campus before my talk yesterday. There is a deep and genuine interest in analyzing screenwriting among these students and of building the film and television industry here. In the years to come I believe the energy these students bring to their research will achieve that dream.

It’s all thanks to my friend and colleague from the Screenwriting Research Network (who is actually the president of the network this year) Carmen Sofia Brenes who suggested me to the committee planning the seminar.
I’ll be speaking on “Why Researching Screenwriters (has Always) Mattered” which will be focused on the importance of storytellers in all cultures, and how screenwriters have become this last century’s most powerful storytellers thanks to the reach of technology.

When the folks hosting the conference announced their theme as “Screen Narratives: Chaos and Order” the word ‘chaos’ immediately brought to mind writers rooms. I offered a quick history of writers rooms (the presentations are only 20 minutes long) and then quoted several current showrunners on how they compose their rooms and how they run them.

Congratulations to Stephens College MFA in TV and Screenwriting alumni Sarah Phillips (IMDB) for winning the Founder’s Circle Award at the Louisiana Film Prize for her film Supplements!
The year is 2289, and all that’s left on Planet Earth is the domed city Old Centauri, roaming sun flares that scorch the land, and the nomadic tribes that mitigate the two. Kiirke comes from one such tribe, and she must travel to Old Centauri, along with her stowaway younger brother, to seek a small fortune to save her family – But the only way to make money as a newcomer to the city is to enroll in Supplements Labs as what the locals call a “lab rat”.
