Dr. Rosanne Welch hosts a Master Class With Executive Producer/Showrunner Gloria Calderón Kellett — Athena Film Festival 2021

Each year, as a sponsor of the Athena Film Festival, the Stephens College MFA in TV and Screenwriting hosts a Master Class interview with a major television showrunner.

For this year’s virtual festival, I had the privilege of interviewing Gloria Calderon Kellett, co-creator and executive producer of the beloved reboot of One Day at a Time.

In our interview, Kellett shared how much she learned about running a show from her earliest days as a writer’s assistant, how earning an MFA was an investment in her future, and how much joy she’s had in using the power of her position to Write, Reach and Represent.

Writers are important.

Writer comes before director when people are writer-directors because writers are more important. You cannot direct some people walking around a room.

Somebody has to say why they’re there and what they’re doing.

Screenwriters have always been important....

Screenwriters have always been important.

During the Hollywood Blacklist 9 out of 10 of those jailed were screenwriters.

Their powerful ideas scared those in power.

At the 'She Called Action' 35 Pilot Table Read Contest

My Second-year MFA candidate Randi Barros and I spent the morning on set at the Manhattan Beach Studios watching a filmed table read of Barros’ script “Springtime in September.” A winner of this year’s ‘She Called Action’ 35 Pilot Table Read Contest, the script concerns a suddenly single mother dealing with dating in the new era.

This “She Called Action” event was created by Cheryl Rodes of the women-owned production company Rodes Unpaved, dedicated to putting women as the heroes of the story.

That’s something the Stephens College MFA in TV and Screenwriting can certainly support!

Stephens College at Denver Pop Culture Con

One of the fun-nest things about many fun things at the Denver PopCon was the chance to see Stephens College film professor (and MFA alum) Chase Thompson debut his film Tampsen Air. He shared fascinating stories about the concept and the production work in the film with the audience- and the various other Screenwriting MFA alums who came out to show their support.

Standing in James Herriot’s Kitchen and looking out into the garden

James Herriot is one of my favorite writers and I love the BBC television adaptations of the stories, too.

Back in 2016 we visited his hometown of Thirsk in Yorkshire and this amazing museum.

From The Research Vault: The Monkees: Still monkeying around and inspiring others to play their songs, Washington Post

That local rock group down the street that’s trying hard to learn their song?

Well, that local rock group is me. I play drums in a Monkees cover band.

Please note that I did not say “tribute” band. The Stepping Stones do not try to re-create the Monkees experience. We do not wear matching red, double-placket shirts. Our lead guitarist does not wear a green woolly hat.

We are not like the Missing Links, a band out of Los Angeles that won the coveted Cloney Award, given by the International Guild of Celebrity Impersonators and Tribute Artists.

We are not like Pleasant Valley Sunday, another Monkees tribute band from Southern California that actually performs with a laugh track.
